City's Sixth Off-Leash Dog Park Opens At Kalo Place Mini Park

New park facility part of public-private partnership with Hawaiian Humane Society
MŌ‘ILI‘ILI – Kalo Place Mini Park was officially reopened today with the blessing of a new off-leash dog park facility for large and small dogs.
A public-private partnership with the neighboring Hawaiian Humane Society resulted in the completion and opening of the sixth off-leash dog park operated by the Department of Parks and Recreation.
Located at the one-acre mini park adjacent to the H-1 east-bound freeway, the 9,325 square foot, fenced dog park area has separate spaces for large and small dogs.
“Through another public-private partnership, this one with the Humane Society, we are turning a parcel of sparsely used passive green space, tucked away in this unique Mō‘ili‘ili neighborhood, into a great area for community dog owners to come together and enjoy some bonding time with their pooches,” said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. “This is the type of positive activation with community support that is crucial for realizing the full potential of our public spaces.”
The creation of the dog park was made possible through a gift donation from the Hawaiian Humane Society, which was accepted by the city through Resolution 19-93.
“The Hawaiian Humane Society is pleased to have been a part of this successful collaboration with the City & County and we look forward to doing much more to improve the lives of our island’s animals together with our partners in city government,” said Anna Neubauer, President and CEO of the Hawaiian Humane Society.
The ceremony was carried live on Mayor Caldwell’s Facebook page. To watch that recorded event please click here.
The dog park hours will reflect those of Kalo Place Mini Park, which is closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Additionally, the dog park will be closed from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesdays to allow for regular
maintenance.
Kalo Place Mini Park was originally closed in early April 2019 for maintenance. That closure was extended to allow for the completion of the new dog park.
