Art Explorium - Coronavirus Update
- Tweet
Dear Art Explorium `Ohana,
We miss you all so much and we hope you are doing well during this crazy time. Even though our studio is still closed, we continue to support keiki creativity even when your at-home art supplies might be running low and your patience might be wearing thin! Please follow our Instagram and Facebook pages for (almost) daily posts that include links, resources, art project ideas, stories that inspire creativity, and more!
As you know, at Art Explorium we often use things that are normally thrown away as art supplies. Now is a great time for this type of "creative reuse" art because it is much more affordable and because it is a an easy way to access art supplies right now. So start saving the items pictured in the photo and list below because they are the keys to many simple yet fun projects for keiki of all ages. Please email images of your keiki getting creative as we would love to share them on our social media accounts to inspire others. You can reach us at info@artexplorium.org.
Art is important now even more than ever. Please take care of yourselves and your loved ones and keep that creative spirit alive. We hope to see you again soon!
With aloha,
Art Explorium
Helpful Art Supplies to Save at Home
(clockwise from top left)
1. Thin, clear plastic
2. Cereal & cracker boxes (old file folders are also a good option)
3. Magazine
4. Scissors
5. Crayons (and/or markers, oil pastels, colored pencils)
6. Glue / glue sticks
7. Paper
8. Corks
9. Paper towel & toilet paper rolls
10. Plastic straws
11. Caps of various sizes, shapes, colors
12. Yarn / ribbon (see below for a cool way to make yarn ball out of a t-shirt if you don't have any on-hand)
And of course be on the lookout for other interesting items you have around the house... buttons, shells, keys, old CDs, etc. You can organize all of your supplies in bins or bags so that you're ready to go as we continue to post project ideas.
We are excited to announce something new: Storytime with Art Explorium! We will be sharing some of our favorite books that inspire keiki creativity, starting with Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh. In this delightful tale, three white mice discover three jars of paint - red, blue, and yellow - and have a lot of fun mixing colors. This book is a perfect choice for young children who are learning about colors and what happens when they are mixed together.
Featured Project: T-Shirt Yarn!
If your yarn supply is looking bare then you can make your own with old t-shirts! This is a great upcycling activity and will replenish your art supply stash without you having to go buy new yarn. This activity requires sharp scissors and some patience so if you have a young child you will need to make the yarn for him/her. Then your keiki can use the t-shirt yarn for future art projects. Middle school keiki can definitely make this on their own.
All you will need:
1. Cotton t-shirt (preferably without seams running down the sides)
2. Sharp scissors
Check out the link to the tutorial above or find another one online (there are so many). Once you make your t-shirt yarn, you will have a great resource for all ages including tweens and teens. Have fun!

Description
Nurturing tomorrow's creative thinkers
Art Explorium provides a fun, safe place where children of all ages have the opportunity and the permission to create freely. We firmly believe that art experiences are an important part of every person's growth and development. So... WE provide the space and materials, YOU provide the ideas and make them happen!
Art Explorium strives to be an eco-friendly organization. Many of the art materials in our studio are items that would normally be thrown in the landfill (old pieces of fabric, used bottle caps, small boxes, magazines, ribbon, etc.). We collect these used materials from our friends and local businesses, and Art Explorium visitors give these items a new life as art.
We offer art classes, birthday parties, and field trips to our studio. We also offer Open Studio time - come on in with your family and dabble in one or all of our art stations which offer activities like painting, sculpting, drawing, making mosaics and more. See you there!
General Information
Come on by! During Open Studio time you are free to drop in, use our space and materials and explore the process of creating.
