Mayor Caldwell statement after the passing of Willie K FULL STORY
Mayor Kirk Caldwell issued a statement after learning about the passing of Hawaiian music legend, Willie K. “We have all known and loved the musical genius that is Willie K,” said Mayor Caldwell. “What he revealed in his last years was the sheer courage and stamina that it takes to perform while seriously ill. Last year, Honolulu hosted the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and we asked Willie to perform for an audience that included mayors from around the world. They loved him, and I think they also came to understand the talent and magic of artists from Hawaii through Willie’s performance. He was obviously tired, but powered on for a hana hou. Honolulu is mourning the loss of a great man, a son of Hawaii, but we are also feeling privileged to have known his grace.” William Awihilima Kahaialiʻi passed away Monday night, May 18, after a two-year battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Debbie Kahaialiʻi, and his four children.
