Freshmen at Saint Louis School Raise Money for the Augustine Foundation

During the Lenten Season, Saint Louis School 9th graders in Ms. Nicole Shigeta's Religion classes wanted to do something special to give back to the community. To start, the freshmen collaborated with 4th graders from Saint Louis School and St. John Vianney in Kailua, via video conferencing, to provide mentoring under the guidance of two Seminarian students, Mr. Taylor Mitchell and Mr. Kurt Meyer, and Marianist priest Father Patrick McDaid, S.M. It was during this time that the freshmen also decided that each of them would donate 25 cents every week during the season of Lent. The 106 students raised a total of $500 at the end of 40 days. Together, the students chose to donate this money to the Augustine Foundation, as the organization provides tuition assistance to local Catholic schools.

Ms. Shigeta remarked that this gesture is a way for these students to thank the Augustine Foundation for providing opportunities for students to attend a Catholic school. "The freshmen are compassionate young men. They realized the need of sacrificing of themselves as God has provided them with wonderful gifts in their lives."

Student representatives from the 9th grade Religion classes will present the $500 check to Sue Ferandin from the Augustine Foundation on Monday, April 19, at 11:00 am in front of Bertram Hall. Students will participate in the event physically distant from each other wearing masks to help support the State's efforts in stopping the spread of the Coronavirus.
