Art in Public Places: Ke Kanu Nei I Ka Ulu Hala
“Ke Kanu Nei I Ka Ulu Hala”, a bronze sculpture by Viliami Tolutaʻu, was dedicated last month at Keaʻau Elementary School. The sculpture symbolizes the nurturer in the lives of our keiki, someone who commits to providing all that is necessary for a healthy future and supports continued growth for the community. She kneels to connect with the ‘āina and with the keiki that she meets to build pilina (a relationship). The hala plant is significant to this area of Puna. The art of lauhala weaving illustrates the unity of the Kea‘au community and its diverse ethnicities of the broader district of Puna and of Moku o Keawe (Hawai‘i Island).

2021/2022 School Year Art Bento
This August, SFCA launched the 2021/2022 School Year Art Bento program by awarding all 15 schools that applied. Program kickoff included one on one meetings by participating schools and the roster of Artistic Teaching Partners with HiSAM/SFCA Art in Public Places Director Karen Ewald. Participating elementary schools include Hahaʻione, Hōkūlani, Queen Kaʻahumanu, Kaʻala, Kailua, Kalihi, Kalihi Kai, Kamaile Academy Public Conversion Charter School, President Abraham Lincoln, Mākaha, Makalapa, Mauka Lani, Mililani Mauka, Voyager Public Conversion Charter School and Waiʻanae Elementary.
Art Bento is a four-part standards-based museum education program created by the SFCA for public and charter schools on Oʻahu. Applications are accepted by the SFCA annually for grades 1 to 6. HiSAM galleries are used as a learning laboratory for inquiry-based learning in literacy, visual and performing arts. Teaching Artists from the SFCA’s Artistic Teaching Partners Roster lead by modeling techniques and strategies to actively engage students and elicit responses to artworks on view in the museum. A professional development session for teachers, pre- and post- museum visits in the classroom, and transportation to and from the museum visit are provided by the SFCA. The 2020/2021 school year Art Bento was done as a live, virtual program and this year has the capacity to be done that way as well.

SFCA Grantee Spotlight
Le Fetuao Samoan Language Center
Le Fetuao Samoan Language Center addressed the critical needs of families during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many families in Hawai'i were urgently in need of food and medical supplies following statewide lockdowns and safety mandates. Le Fetuao collaborated with local businesses to create food boxes and provide food and medical necessities to over 200 families. Le Fetuao also worked to support stranded American Samoa residents with repatriation efforts by organizing flights back to American Samoa and assisted residents while quarantining in Hawaiʻi hotels.
As a State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) Biennium Grants FY2021 grantee, Le Fetuao continued during this time to serve children and youth with virtual Aoga Samoa. Students engaged virtually to learn Samoan language, traditional songs and stories. In addition, a storybook was produced and utilized for virtual lessons.

Donkey Mill Art Center
The Donkey Mill Art Center (DMAC), a State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Grantee as well as an ARTS FIRST Partner, offered free and subsidized on-line summer and fall 2020 programs for keiki ages 6 - 12 for the Kona community. The classes explored movement and art making using easy to find objects at home and in nature. DMAC emphasized expression through creative movement and the practice of kilo (to observe) the environment (nature and home) to promote creativity, awareness and build problem solving skills. Students learned that art can be made from anything and teaching moments and inspiration are found amongst their friends and peers.
DMAC also created 11 art videos for grades K - 2 for Holualoa Elementary School on the subject of Hawaii's endangered species for teachers to use as synchronous and asynchronous learning tools on Google Meet. DMAC noted that the classroom teachers used these videos in their own way and developed self confidence using the elements of art to connect with students.

The newer works were purchased virtually during the pandemic and with the help of Neighbor Island art consultants.
