Emergency shelters opened for the public ahead of the storm
HONOLULU -- The City and County of Honolulu is opening four emergency shelters today as of 6 p.m. as a precaution ahead of the Kona Low storm that is anticipated to impact O‘ahu starting tonight.
The shelter list includes:
- Honolulu District - Kalakaua District Park, 720 McNeil St, Honolulu
- Leeward District -- Makaha Community Park, 84-730 Manuku St, Waianae
- North Shore District - Sunset Beach Recreation Center, 59-540 Kamehameha Hwy, Haleiwa
- Windward District - Kailua District Park, 21 S. Kainalu Dr, Kailua
People are asked to bring their own food, water, bedding, toiletries and supplies. Additional shelter locations may be opened depending on the severity of the storm.
Pets are allowed and must be kept in a crate. The animal's owner is responsible for any food and supplies the pet may need.
The city sends a sincere mahalo to the following agencies and their partners for the help operating and staffing the shelter locations:
- Department of Parks and Recreation
- American Red Cross
- Partners in Care and their network of service providers
- Hawaii Foodbank
- Hawaiian Humane Society
The National Weather Service stated flooding and severe weather from a Kona Low system could begin impacting O‘ahu this evening with effects continuing through Tuesday. There is potential for O‘ahu to experience a catastrophic rain event during this period with intense rain bands. Deep tropical moisture could produce widespread 10 to 15 inches of rain with isolated areas of 20 to 25 inches with numerous road closures and property damage possible with numerous road closures and property damage possible. In addition, strong southerly winds 20 to 35 mph with localized gusts to 50 mph possible tonight through Monday.
