Survey launched to gather community input for outdoor court rules
Information will be used to help draft revisions to rules, guidelines for outdoor courts in City parks 
O‘AHU – As an integral part of our island lifestyle, outdoor play courts are some of the most popular park facilities around O‘ahu. Now the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) wants to hear from you on how we can better manage these park amenities as their popularity continues to grow!

DPR is inviting members of our community to share their opinions and experiences by participating in a survey now open to the public. You can access the survey by visiting the website bit.ly/outdoorcourtsurvey from now until Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. The feedback received will be compiled and used as a reference to further develop our proposed rule changes governing outdoor court usage.

“One of the many lessons we have learned through this pandemic is the importance of our shared recreational spaces, especially outdoor facilities which are proven to be safer than indoor facilities,” said Laura H. Thielen, Director of the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation. “Combine that with our efforts to rehabilitate these courts, through the Kākou for Parks Initiative, and accommodating newer sports, such as pickleball, and it makes effective management of these courts even more important.”

Outdoor play courts include basketball, pickleball, tennis, volleyball and multi-use courts which are located in exterior sections of City park locations. Many of these courts serve several purposes, such tennis and volleyball courts with pickleball court lines overlaid. The information gathered in this survey will help determine how DPR regulates the use of these courts, including: instructional classes, tournaments, court time limits, and general public use.

Since 2015, the Kākou for Parks Initiative has improved some of the most heavily used and popular City park facilities around O‘ahu, including resurfacing outdoor courts and installing new pickleball courts. This has yielded 541 resurfaced outdoor courts at 141 different parks, and 161 lined pickleball courts at 86 parks. To track the progress of this initiative visit bit.ly/kakouforparks
