• Hawaii State Library - New, Faster Checkout At Your Local Library

NEW, FASTER CHECKOUT AT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY

HONOLULU -- Beginning today, new technology will make checking out materials faster and more convenient at Hawaii's public libraries.

"We're now able to check out stacks of books, CDs, DVDs and other materials at one time rather than individually," said Stacey A. Aldrich, State Librarian. "This will make getting in and out of the library much faster," she added.

The system, which reads a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag instead of scanning individual barcodes, took about a year to install across the system at a cost of $3 million, which was appropriated by the State Legislature in 2022.

"The Nanakuli Public Library has used RFID technology since its opening in 2018, and readers saw the benefits right away. We want all our patrons to have the same great experience," Aldrich said.

Benefits to Patrons:

• · Checking out books and other materials is much faster.
• · Books and other materials will be scanned in batches when returned so they get back on the shelves and are available for others to borrow more quickly.
• · Mis-shelved books can be found quickly, so patrons can get what they want to read.
• · Patrons who are in a hurry may use the optional self-checkout stations.

"Ultimately, this will create new efficiencies so library staff can better serve our communities," Aldrich noted.
