City to begin issuing 4-year licenses to drivers age 72 and older

HONOLULU- O‘ahu residents who are between ages 72 and 79 will have the option to renew their driver’s license every four years, starting Tuesday Jan. 3.

The new service gives the more than 75,000 drivers in this age group long-awaited additional time to update expiring licenses.

State law enacted last year made it possible for the City and County of Honolulu to offer 4-year driver’s licenses - instead of only 2-year driver’s licenses - to residents in this particular age group who are free of conditions that could impair their driving ability.

“We listened to the concerns of a healthy and active segment of our kūpuna population and supported extending renewals in this sector of our community,” said Kim Hashiro, director of the city’s Department of Customer Services.

All driver’s licenses can be renewed up to six months prior to expiration. The four-year driver’s license renewal fee is $20, which is consistent with the current $5 per year fee for driver’s licenses.

Drivers age 72 and older with conditions that could impair their driving ability remain eligible for a two-year driver’s license, and are required to submit a Medical Report, Form DOT-H2058.
