HONOLULU – A City construction project delivering long-awaited improvements to Kekaulike Mall in Chinatown is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 17. Improvements to Kekaulike Mall will include:

  • New pavement with cast-in-place concrete
  • Storm water management
  • Below-grade storm drain
  • Surface area drainage
  • Storm water filtration
  • New shade trees
  • New landscaping materials
  • Root support systems
  • Tree guards
  • Soil volume and sprinklers
  • Tree gates
  • New lighting and poles
  • Electrical improvements
  • Community dragon decal

The existing decal on King Street will be removed and relocated to the center of Kekaulike Mall.

The $4.4 million project is scheduled to be completed in October 2023. Businesses will remain open, and accessibility will be maintained during construction. Hours of construction will be Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be no work scheduled for weekends and holidays.

The improvement project will be bound between Hotel Street and the Kekaulike Street and King Street intersection. Kekaulike Street will be used as a staging area throughout construction, and will have restricted parking.

Renovations to Kekaulike Mall been sought after since 2016. In early May 2021, the Blangiardi Administration announced efforts to prioritize a variety of improvements to this historic district in Downtown Honolulu. Since that time, the City has worked diligently and delivered many items on that initial list of priorities, including:

Increased police presence and enforcement
•Working with property managers to rent 755 affordable housing units in five projects
Sidewalk cleaning and repairs
•Reopening and reactivating the renovated Dr. Sun yat-sen Memorial
Planting 44 street trees and other landscaping
•Relocating the River of Life Mission’s public feeding operations in April 2022
•Enhancing the district with public artwork
along Fort Street Mall and at ‘A‘ala Park
