New Exhibitions At Hawaii State Museum: "Fear of the Unknown"

Exhibit of public art opens Friday July 7, 2023

HONOLULU: The Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) invites the public to the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum’s newest exhibit, “Fear of the Unknown” on Friday, July 7. The museum will open at 10:00 a.m. and the artist reception will take place in the second floor museum gallery from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. The museum’s First Friday live music event will also be taking place at the museum in the outdoor Sculpture Garden.

Museum visitors are invited to contemplate 34 enigmatic artworks by 28 artists in the ʻEwa gallery (second floor). Take a closer look and find details that help reveal narratives of exploration, change, and discovery.

Some artworks are recent additions to the collection, on display to the public for the first time:
•“Eianā Kini Akua (Ancestors with Us)” by Meleanna Meyer, acquired from the 2023 ʻIkeKanaka exhibition, Maui Arts and Cultural Center
•“Future Kiʻi” by Solomon Enos, acquired from the 2023 ʻIke Kanaka exhibition,Maui Arts and Cultural Center
•“Kāhea,a call” by Abigail Romanchak, acquired from the 2023 ʻAi Pōhaku, Stone Eaters exhibit at University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa Art Gallery

Artworks from the SFCA’s Art in Public Places Collection are displayed in state government sites across the state, including schools, libraries, and state office buildings. For over fifty years, the Art in Public Places Collection of the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts has been recognized as one of the most significant collections of contemporary art of Hawaiʻi.

The museum is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and is closed on Sunday and state and federal holidays. Admission is always free! The Hawaiʻi State Art Museum and the Art in Public Places Collection are a part the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts’ Art in Public Places Program.

About the SFCA
The Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) is Hawaiʻi’s state government arts agency. Established in 1965 by the Hawaiʻi State Legislature, through the vision and effort of Hawaiʻi leaders, the creation of a state arts agency made Hawaiʻi eligible to receive federal grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), newly established on September 29, 1965. The SFCA is administratively attached to the Department of Accounting and General Services and funded by the State of Hawaiʻi and the National Endowment for the Arts.

What is a State Arts Agency?
State arts agencies were created by legislatures and governors to promote the arts and reduce barriers to cultural participation. Every state and U.S. jurisdiction has a designated arts agency, providing grants, services, and leadership that make the arts accessible to everyone. State arts agencies are funded through appropriations from state legislatures. State arts agencies also receive 40% of the federal grant dollars Congress provides to the National Endowment for the Arts.
