Third phase of Kapi‘olani Park pathway improvements begins next week

Project will improve, expand concrete sidewalk along the mauka-side of Kalākaua Avenue

O‘AHU -- The third phase of renovations to the perimeter pathway around the historic Kapi‘olani Park is set to begin next week Monday, March 25, 2024.

The project will improve and expand the stretch of concrete pathway on the mauka-side of Kalākaua Avenue between Monsarrat and Paki avenues. This will be done by removing the existing three-foot-wide walkway, and replacing it with an eight-foot-wide concrete walkway.

The project will be broken up into sections, beginning on the Diamond Head-side of park near the Dillingham Fountain. The entire project is expected to be finished before the end of summer 2024.

The $125,886 design contract and $14,593 archaeological monitoring plan was awarded to SEY Engineers. The $947,700 construction contract was awarded to Integrated Construction, Inc.

This project represents the third phase of the effort to improve this popular pathway around Kapi‘olani Park. The first project, bordering the Honolulu Zoo from Kapahulu to Monsarrat, improved about a quarter mile of the pathway in 2021.The second project in 2023 renovated the three-quarter mile stretch of the shared-use path along the makai-side of Paki Avenue between Monsarrat Ave. and Poni Moi Rd.

Utilized by King David Kalākaua as polo fields, and dedicated in honor of Queen Kapi‘olani in 1877, the 200-acre Kapi‘olani Park remains one of the City's largest and most popular public spaces. Recognized as the second oldest park land managed by the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation, the park encompasses other notable attractions such as the Waikīkī Shell and Honolulu Zoo.
