SFCA Artists in the Schools Spotlight: Kahakai Elementary School
“As part of a two-year Artist in the Schools (AITS) grant, Kahakai Elementary 3rd graders learned to use the language of art alongside scientific inquiry and evidence to create visual interpretations of Hawaiʻi weather maps. Students translated scientific weather data into abstract and landscape paintings, creating visual narratives depicting Hawaiʻi Island regions prone to drought and flood conditions.”

SFCA Grants and Community Programs

SFCA Grantee Spotlight: Ke Kumu Hawaiʻi featured at Bishop Museum, Capitol Modern

“Nā Akua Ākea” with Ke Kumu Hawaiʻi (Lloyd Kumulaʻau Sing and Haunani Balino Sing), took place at the Bishop Museum on May 10. This exhibit and discussion showcased the work of the Oʻahu cohort of haumāna practitioners who embarked on a year-long weaving journey.

View their work in the “Nā Akua Ākea” exhibit at Capitol Modern through December 2024. Weaving demonstrations will also be taking place during FestPAC (additional information at CapitolModern.org/festpac).

The Sings are recent SFCA Folk and Traditional Arts grantees.

•   Kauaʻi Now, May 27, 2024 3 Kauaʻi arts education programs each awarded $8K from new statewide initiative “Three Kaua‘i arts education programs are among 10 throughout Hawai‘i awarded a portion of more than $72,000 from the Hawai‘i Community Foundation’s new Museum Without Walls Arts Education Initiative. •   Maui Now, May 27, 2024 Maui arts teacher awarded $8,000 for Hale Mahaolu kupuna arts program “Maui jewelry artist and arts teacher Julie Matheis, in partnership with Hale Mahaolu, has been awarded $8,000 from the Hawai‘i Community Foundation as part of its new Museum Without Walls Arts Education Initiative. Matheis will lead Hale Mahaolu’s “Connecting Kūpuna through the Arts” residency, a 12-session visual arts program for senior citizens in two adjacent low-income housing complexes, according to an announcement from the foundation. The first six sessions will focus on community-building activities, creating paintings, chess sets and checkerboards for public display. SFCA Board approves 33 artworks, 11 exhibit visits
The SFCA Board of Commissioners approved the purchase of thirty-three artworks for the SFCA Art in Public Places Collection on May 15, 2024. This included five from the “Still Standing” MFA exhibit at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and one from the “2023 Hawaiʻi Nei” exhibition at Wailoa Center.

The SFCA Board of Commissioners Art in Public Places Committee has begun scheduling more frequent meetings this year, in part to speed up the process of approving exhibit visits, artwork purchases, and artwork loans.

Art Acquisition Selection Committee (AASC) visits provide important support for artists and arts organization venues statewide. The SFCA Board of Commissioners has approved Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) visits to these exhibits:

Decisions about grants, artwork purchases, and more are made by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) Board of Commissioners. Meetings are currently being held virtually on Zoom, and the public is invited to attend. Appointed by the state governor, the Board of Commissioners oversees the Executive Director, provides input, and approves spending. Commissioners are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their duties.

Individuals may submit written testimony on posted agenda items in advance of the meeting via email to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov or by mail addressed to the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, 250 South Hotel Street, 2nd Floor, Honolulu, HI 96813. Individuals interested in signing up to provide oral testimony on posted agenda items at the meeting may submit their name, email, and phone number to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov. Individuals may provide oral testimony at the meeting via the above-listed video conferencing link or by calling the above listed telephone number. Testimony presented during the meeting will be limited to three minutes each.
Agenda items for General Meetings may include approval of artwork acquisition recommendations and Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) art exhibit visit recommendations.
