  • The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS) is encouraging Oʻahu residents — and especially public, private and college-aged students — to embrace different ways to get around the island this year, especially as the new school year begins.

HONOLULU -- The City and County of Honolulu Department of Design and Construction would like to inform the public of an upcoming road rehabilitation project in the Kaka‘ako area. The work will be done in various areas along:

  • Kawaiaha‘o St. (South St. to Cooke St.)
  • Pohukaina St. (Punchbowl St. to Cooke St.)
  • Auahi St. (Cooke St. to Queen St.)
  • Ilalo St. (Kōula St. to Ala Moana Blvd.)
  • Keawe St. (Pohukaina St. to Halekauwila St.)
  • Cooke St. (Ala Moana Blvd. to Kapi‘olani Blvd.)
  • Ahui St. (Pohukaina St. to Halekauwila St.)
  • Kamake‘e St. (Ala Moana Blvd. to Kapi‘olani Blvd.)
  • Queen St. (Ala Moana Blvd. to Auahi St.)

Construction is expected to start on Monday, August 19, 2024, and will last approximately three months. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, between 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (excluding holidays).

This project includes the reconstruction of asphalt roads, striping, and installation of signs. These enhancements are expected to improve driving conditions, roadway visibility, and safety.

Please note that the contractor will not be working on the entire project area at one time. Construction is performed in smaller phases, to help reduce impacts to the public and facilitate traffic movement as much as possible. The contractor is responsible for coordinating and facilitating local area traffic for businesses and residents, including deliveries, trash collection, and emergency services.

The contractor will also be placing "NO PARKING" signs along the sides of roadways one week in advance of work starting in a certain area, to help notify the public of upcoming construction. Drivers are asked to observe the dates and times of these notices, as vehicles parked on posted streets will be towed at the owner's expense.

The public should anticipate detours and lane or road closure delays. Please allow for extra travel time while navigating in the area, and remember to observe all traffic controls, posted signs, and Special Duty Police Officers.

Please note the following information:

New asphalt is hot, black, and tacky; walking or driving through uncured pavement can result in serious burns or tracking marks on driveways/sidewalks. Therefore, the contractor may delay access through hazardous construction areas during work hours for the safety and protection of the public.

Every effort will be made to complete this essential work as quickly and with as little inconvenience to the community as possible.

We appreciate the public's assistance and cooperation during this project and thank them for their patience and support while we work to improve roads in our community. Questions and comments may be directed to the Department of Design and Construction, at (808) 768-8400.
