By day Māui’s fishhook reminds us of the lore of the creation of the Hawaiian Islands. When fishing with his brothers, Māui’s hook instead pulls up the seafloor above the ocean’s surface. The line then breaks and leaves the islands exposed. By night, Māui’s hook can be seen in the sky as the constellation Mānaiakalani, as it leads the Milky Way across the sky and sets each summer in the waters off the coast of Nānākuli, on the west side of Oʻahu. The entry portal for the 2025 Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Art Awards competition is now open! Submissions are due by December 15, 2024, through the Scholastic Art Awards portal. For more information and to enter, please visit ArtAndWriting.org/regions/HI001A.

19 photographs from SFCA collection on loan to Gallery ʻIolani exhibit
19 photographs from the SFCA Art in Public Places Collection are on loan to a new exhibit at Gallery ʻIolani (Windward Community College). The exhibition features eleven Hawaiʻi photographers "who mastered the silver gelatin process to create artistic records of our people and our history over the past 50 years" (Gallery ʻIolani). Participating artists: Wayne Levin, Stan Tomita, Shuzo Uemoto, Renee Iijima, Mark Hamasaki, Dr. Kimo Alexander Cashman, Karen K. Kosasa, Kapulani Landgraf, Jan Becket, Franco Salmoiraghi, and Ed Greevy.

Community invited to create pool art around the state capitol
“The new installation will feature glass artwork that resembles the ocean. “The original intention for the reflective pools around the Hawaii State Capitol was to represent all the different oceans and nearshore areas around the Hawaiian Islands, bringing them together like an amalgamation of different facets,” said artist Solomon Enos, selected to create the artwork. “The idea is to maintain that same intention; what was literally water to represent the ocean will now be glass to figuratively represent it.” View or read the full story on the KHON-2 News website: www.khon2.com/top-stories/community-invited-to-create-pool-art-around-the-state-capitol.

SFCA Board approves all agenda items at September meeting

The SFCA Board of Commissioners general meeting on September 11, 2024 approved and passed all agenda items, including the purchase of 10 artworks, the approval of a Bernice Akamine artwork loan to the Hawaiʻi Craftsmen annual exhibition, and an Art Acquisition Selection Committee approval for the “E Ola Ke Kahua o Ka Hana Kapa (The Foundation of Kapa Making Thrives/Lives” exhibit at Kahilu Theatre (Kamuela, Hawaiʻi Island).

Upcoming SFCA Board of Commissioners Meetings

• October 13, 2024: Art in Public Places Committee Meeting, 10:00 a.m.

Decisions about grants, artwork purchases, and more are made by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) Board of Commissioners. Meetings are currently being held virtually on Zoom, and the public is invited to attend. Appointed by the state governor, the Board of Commissioners oversees the Executive Director, provides input, and approves spending. Commissioners are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their duties.

Individuals may submit written testimony on posted agenda items in advance of the meeting via email to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov or by mail addressed to the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, 250 South Hotel Street, 2nd Floor, Honolulu, HI 96813. Individuals interested in signing up to provide oral testimony on posted agenda items at the meeting may submit their name, email, and phone number to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov. Individuals may provide oral testimony at the meeting via the above-listed video conferencing link or by calling the above listed telephone number. Testimony presented during the meeting will be limited to three minutes each.
Agenda items for General Meetings may include approval of artwork acquisition recommendations and Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) art exhibit visit recommendations.
