Artists in the schools spotlight: taiko drumming at Linapuni Elementary School and Hawaii School for the Deaf and Blind teaches respect, numbers, musical concepts
In letters to state legislators, SFCA Artistic Teaching Partner Chizuko Endo said “Through Artists in the Schools, I have been able to take the art of taiko (Japanese drumming) into Linapuni Elementary School as well as the Hawaii School for the Deaf and Blind this past school year. I utilize taiko as a vehicle to teach respect, numbers, colors, syllables, musical concepts and dynamics, subject matter (such as the Humuhumunukunukuapuaʻa, etc.) cultural etiquette, and more. […] Thank you again for your support of Artists in the Schools and the Arts in Public Places programs funded by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. I hope you will continue to support projects like these which benefit not only the students, but the artists, and the community as it helps to create better well rounded citizens.”

Artists in the Schools provides high quality arts education to State of Hawaiʻi Department of Education public and charter schools, grades pre-K through 12. All Hawaiʻi public schools are eligible to apply to the program. Learn more about Artists on the Schools on the SFCA website:
