At a critical time for public media,
Hawai‘i Public Radio works to remain strong
The statewide nonprofit media organization launches its spring membership campaign tomorrow

Hawai‘i Public Radio is bringing people together with Live from the Atherton, a multiplatform initiative that encompasses live events, digital content and broadcasts. Dr. Jon Osorio (right) was the featured guest at a March 13 in-studio event. Dr. Osorio invited the audience to join him in song with "Hawai‘i Aloha." "Community and connection are powerful repellents to polarization and isolation," HPR CEO Meredith Artley said.
(HONOLULU) Hawai‘i Public Radio's spring membership campaign kicks off tomorrow at 6:30 a.m. on HPR-1 and HPR-2 across its broadcast and digital platforms.
At a critical time for public media, Hawai‘i Public Radio remains strong, thanks to the people of Hawai‘i:
Financial contributions from the community, including individuals and local sponsors, make up 94% of HPR's $7.6 million operating budget. The remaining 6% comes from federal funding via the private nonprofit, Corporation for Public Broadcasting. "If that 6%—about $525,000—were to go away, it would hurt and some of our services would be impacted," wrote HPR President & CEO Meredith Artley in a recent message. "But we are not dependent on federal funding to a degree that we could not survive without it. We have a balanced budget, no debt, a clean financial audit."
That said, HPR depends on ongoing support from its audience. "It doesn’t get more direct-to-consumer than HPR’s business model," Artley said. Funding from listener contributions and sponsorships provide critical resources for HPR's in-depth news, information and music programs, as well as the broadcast and digital infrastructure to deliver these programs to the public.
While HPR could get by without federal funding, this is not necessarily true for other stations throughout the country, some of whom rely on that money for 10% or more of their budget. Federal funding cuts would likely damage the nationwide system that provides programming and infrastructure that HPR and other local public media organizations rely on.
Hawaiʻi Public Radio is not owned or controlled by the government, by NPR, or by any outside interest or wealthy individual. "Our strength and independence comes from the people we serve," Artley said.
Artley added: "Despite threats from the FCC to the public media system at large, there is no investigation into HPR when it comes to underwriting or anything else. Our sponsorship practices are solid and continue to be in line with FCC regulations."
The campaign is scheduled to conclude at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 11. Donations may be made online at members.hawaiipublicradio.org or by calling 888-536-4700.
